What the timeline strip holds#

The timeline is the strip between the preview and the events list. It shows when everything happened, and it lets you move through the run. It has two parts stacked together: a whole-run overview on top, and the detailed track below it.

The overview at the top shows the entire trace at a glance, with a density plot of activity. It also holds the window you use to zoom: drag a box across it to focus on a stretch of time, and drag the window's edges or middle to adjust or move that focus.

The track below shows two things for the range you focus on: the activity markers and the network waterfall.

• The activity histogram plots actions, events, and console messages so you can see where the run was busy.
• The network waterfall draws each request as a bar of timing phases.

Move the playhead and zoom#

Click anywhere on the track to move the playhead there, or drag the playhead to scrub. The red line is the current time, and it stays with the preview and the selected action.

To zoom, hold Ctrl or Cmd and scroll over the timeline. The timeline zooms around the pointer. You can also draw a box on the overview to zoom to exactly that range. Hold Shift as you scroll to pan left and right without a change to the zoom. When the network rows overflow, a scroll without a modifier moves through them.

When you zoom in, a zoom figure appears next to the play controls, so you know how far in you are.
